Still life

Still Life

Copper, Silver plate

Every work is made from only one sheet of copper. After cutting the shape of insect by hand with a metal saw, it is shaped in three-dimension only by bending. Any piece is not cut off from the sheet. The insect preserves its connection with the original metal sheet and it is not soldered.

“Still life” means a picture of an arrangement of objects in Western art. As a settled way of manner in the middle ages of Europe, the contrast of life and death was painted. For example, when beautiful flowers in full bloom are painted, withered ones must be there. With contrasted motif, mutability or inevitability of death was expressed. These works which consist of the clipped-out holes and cubic insects show the comparison between unmoved and action, or nothing and something.

I have finished to create insects without cutting them off from the sheet, which shows figures of life as they are.
